For decades, Assyrians have faced the illegal seizure, confiscation, and encroachment upon their ancestral lands in their historical homeland. Despite final court rulings in favor of Assyrian landowners, the failure of relevant authorities to enforce these decisions has allowed these violations to continue.

In response, the Assyrian Parliament has established the Committee on Assyrian Lands in the Homeland.

 

The Committee will document cases involving the illegal seizure and appropriation of Assyrian lands, review relevant national and international laws, collect evidence, and build comprehensive legal files.

 

A key objective of the Committee is to prepare and pursue cases before competent national and international courts and judicial bodies. Where jurisdiction and legal requirements permit, the Committee will seek to bring cases before international courts, tribunals, and relevant international legal and human rights mechanisms, seeking justice, accountability, restitution, and the protection of Assyrian land rights.

 

We are pleased to announce that several Assyrian lawyers and individuals with relevant legal knowledge and expertise have already joined the Committee and begun contributing to this important initiative.

 

The Committee brings together expertise in the following areas:

– International and human rights law

– Indigenous peoples’ rights

– Land and property law

– Iraqi and regional legal systems

– International litigation and legal advocacy

– Human rights documentation and evidence gathering

 

The Committee will work to establish a comprehensive legal record of Assyrian land cases, identify patterns of violations, and determine viable legal avenues for pursuing justice and accountability.

 

Protecting Assyrian lands is essential to the continued existence of the Assyrian people in their ancestral homeland. These lands are an integral part of our historical, national, cultural, and communal heritage
